A Faculty Development Guide for First Time Basic Science Tutors

HMS_guideMichael Parker and Elizabeth Ferrenz conducted over 30 one-on-one interviews with the best, most experienced tutors at HMS and compiled about 45 hours of digital “tape” (approximately 1000 transcribed pages). Using the information shared by the tutors, along with student feedback and other resources, they created a tutorial guide for students and faculty.

Teaching Challenge:

Tutors at HMS have been given relatively little formal training in becoming effective tutorial leaders; similarly, students have been given minimal guidance as to how to get the most out of their tutorial experiences. HMS has experienced and outstanding tutors, but their collective wisdom had not been codified in a format that can serve as a resource for students and teachers.
